4 The Brazilian lubricant market in 2025
It's already a trademark of Lubes em Foco magazine to research and present its readers with a complete analysis of the Brazilian lubricant market figures, showing the year-end results and the percentage change compared to the previous year. This was also done for the year 2025. Working with market data, researching with the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) and the largest companies in the sector, was a challenging task, but one we are already quite familiar with. However, this time we encountered some unusual and more complex situations when we needed to establish a correlation with the year 2024 to determine the market trend.
10 The Iran War and Group III
Three Group III plants in the Middle East account for more than 2 million tons of annual capacity. As of the date of this publication, all three are out of operation or have compromised operations. Pearl GTL, in Ras Laffan, Qatar — the world's second-largest single source of Group III/III+, with ~1.1 million tons/year — suspended production on March 2 after QatarEnergy declared force majeure, a consequence of Iranian drone attacks on the gas infrastructure of the North Field. ADNOC's Ruwais refinery in Abu Dhabi shut down on March 10 after an Iranian drone caused a fire. And BAPCO's plant in Sitra, Bahrain — the region's third-largest producer — operates under direct threat, with its crude oil supply via Saudi Aramco partially vulnerable to the same conflict that has already paralyzed its neighbors.
20 New category of oil for diesel engines
The PC-12 category, which will replace the current CK-4 and FA-4 oils, has overcome its last technical hurdles and is on track for its first license on January 1, 2027. “PC-12 is really in the final stage,” said Bill O’Ryan, director of the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System at the American Petroleum Institute (API). “All votes from ASTM and the API Lubricants Group have been approved.” O’Ryan spoke during a panel discussion at the American Truckers Association (ATA) Council on Technology and Maintenance Annual Meeting in Nashville. These approvals pave the way for the two service categories that will make up PC-12: API CL-4, which will replace CK-4 as the primary backward-compatible oil, and API FB-4, designed for newer engines that can benefit from lower viscosity oils for fuel economy gains.
