Brazilian Lubricants Market surprises
Brazilian Lubricants Market surprises – Research shows that the Brazilian lubricants market will see a significant increase in volume in 2023, reaching a total of 1.497 million cubic meters, which corresponds to an increase of 6.9% compared to 2022. The study carried out by Lubes em Foco magazine took into account the figures of the large companies in the segment, together with fairly realistic estimates of the performance of the main small and medium-sized companies in the sector.
Automotive industry was the highlight
According to data released by the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (ANFFAVEA), despite 1.9% lower production in 2023, the automobile industry, the main factor impacting the lubricants market, ended the period with an increase in new car sales of 9.7% compared to the previous year, driven mainly by incentives provided by provisional measures with tax breaks and improved credit to the consumer market.
Vehicle sales in 2023 reached a total of 2.3 million units, compared to 2.1 million in 2022.
ANFAVEA is projecting sales growth of 6.1% for 2024, with production also expected to rise by the same amount.

The Lubes em Foco survey evaluated the performance of the TOP 10 lubricant distributors, and pointed to Iconic Lubrificantes (Chevron + Ipiranga) as the market leader, with a market share of 17.7%, followed by Cosan Lubrificantes/Moove, distributor of Mobil products, with 16.9%, Vibra Energia, with Lubrax products and a share of 15.9%, Raízen with Shell products, with 11.7% and Petronas, closing out the TOP 5.
Next up are Ultrax (1.9%), YPF (1.8%), Castrol (1.6%), Lucheti (1.3%) and Teclub (1.2%), rounding off the top 10.
Within the coherence of the study carried out, there was a significant increase in sales of automotive oils, especially those aimed at Otto cycle engines, i.e. cars running on gasoline, alcohol and natural gas. To a lesser extent, diesel engine oils also showed an increase in sales.
ANP prepares to take back control of published figures
In an exclusive interview with Lubes em Foco, the Superintendent of the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency, Diogo Valério, who is in charge of the Distribution and Logistics Superintendence – SDL, said that the agency is reviewing many procedures and even methodology to improve the Product Movement Information System – SIMP.
According to Diogo Valério, the ANP’s intention is to hold a workshop with the market later this month to exchange experiences and present a new table of products, in order to facilitate the process and mitigate possible mistakes that could cause distortions in the final figures. “The change in methodology should help companies provide the information that will feed the system,” commented Diogo.
During the interview meeting, the ANP made it clear that it is attentive to the problems and challenges that exist in relations with the sector’s economic agents and that it is willing to take the necessary steps to increase the efficiency and moralization of the Brazilian lubricants market.
The director of Lubes em Foco magazine, Pedro Nelson Belmiro, reiterated the importance of the ANP in the process of maturing the market and took the opportunity to agree with Superintendent Diogo Valério to give a talk on this subject at the XIV International Meeting with the Market, which will be held on July 2 and 3 this year.
A more complete summary of the lubricants market with detailed information on the base oil and re-refined oil markets will be published in the next edition of Lubes em Foco magazine this month.
