Raízen and BYD: Partnership for Sustainable Electric Mobility in Brazil

Sustainable Electric Mobility in Brazil – Raízen Power, a brand dedicated to Raízen’s renewable electric energy solutions, and BYD, the world leader in sales of electrified vehicles, announced a strategic partnership to accelerate sustainable electric mobility in Brazil. The agreement between the companies includes a series of initiatives, including the construction of electric recharge hubs with Shell Recharge solutions in eight capitals over the next three years.

The implementation will begin in 2024 in the cities of São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Belo Horizonte (MG), Brasília (DF), Curitiba (PR), Florianópolis (SC), Salvador (BA), and Belém (PA). The partnership was celebrated at an event in Shenzhen, China, and was attended by executives from Raízen Power, BYD, and Shell.

The goal of the partnership is to significantly expand the public network of electric chargers in the country’s main capitals, with 100% clean and renewable energy, providing a technological recharge experience.

Agreement Foresees Installation of 600 New Recharge Points

In total, approximately 600 new DC recharge points will be installed, adding more than 18 MW of installed power to recharge electric vehicles nationwide. The companies foresee a competitive offering of recharge services for BYD drivers on the Shell Recharge network and renewable energy for their dealerships. Considering the best customer journey, the partnership includes collaboration with Tupinambá, a platform focused on generating the best digital experience for electric car users.

Through the Shell Recharge program, Raízen Power, one of the country’s largest electric energy players, aims to lead the electromobility market, reaching about 25% market share in the segment. Additionally, the brand intends to achieve 10% participation in the free energy market and significantly increase its distributed generation projects, two clean energy trading solutions that provide savings on bills for residential, commercial, and large business consumers.

“We want to democratize access to electric mobility and renewable energy, making these solutions more accessible, economical, and attractive to the market. With this partnership between Raízen Power and BYD, we will be closer to the customer and present throughout their recharge journey with the Shell Recharge network, from a complete and integrated portfolio that meets global demands in search of a more sustainable future,” comments Ricardo Mussa, CEO of Raízen.

Raízen is a licensee of the Shell brand and has a network with almost eight thousand stations in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, serving millions of consumers daily on their journeys.

Strategic Partnership to Boost Electric Mobility

This partnership is also strategic for the development and implementation of recharge equipment and battery solutions from BYD. BYD consumers will also have discounts on recharges at hubs located in the eight cities.

“We believe it is crucial to have a robust and widely distributed recharge infrastructure. As we embark on our ambitious sales expansion plan, investing in recharge infrastructure is essential. This not only ensures convenience for our customers but also accelerates the transition to a sustainable and electrified future, driving the growth of transport powered by clean energy,” commented Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Americas.

Strategic Cooperation Signed in 2022

This recent partnership in Brazil is based on a strategic cooperation agreement signed by Shell and BYD in 2022 to accelerate the energy transition and improve the recharge experience for BYD’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle customers worldwide.

István Kapitány, Shell’s Executive Vice President of Global Mobility, said: “No company can drive electric mobility alone. This will require unprecedented collaboration between industry, government, and customers. This latest agreement is a great example of how we are achieving this with the help of our current partners, Raízen and BYD. Our relationship with BYD, for example, began in China and Europe, and now we look forward to playing our part in growing the adoption of electric vehicles in Brazil, making recharging as convenient and enjoyable as possible.”

Shell has one of the world’s largest electric vehicle charging networks in terms of national reach, with about 55,000 public charging points in more than 30 markets and expects to have approximately 70,000 points by 2025. In September 2023, Shenzhen Shell and BYD Electric Vehicle A Investment Company Limited – a joint venture between Shell and BYD – inaugurated the largest Shell electric vehicle charging station in the world, located in Shenzhen, China, with 258 fast chargers. Currently, the Shell brand.

Currently, this Shell brand hub serves over 3,300 electric vehicle customers every day with six convenience options, such as a lounge, Shell Café, and Shell Select. The signing ceremony between Raízen Power and BYD marks an important moment in the strategic partnership between the two parties globally.
