New engine oil standards

New engine oil standards – The American Petroleum Institute (API) has formally approved new standards for gasoline engine oils: ILSAC GF-7A, GF-7B, and API SQ. These advanced specifications aim to improve fuel efficiency, engine protection, and emissions reduction, aligning with the demands of modern vehicles and regulatory requirements.

The new standards will take effect on 31 March 2025, under the API’s Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System. ILSAC GF-7A-certified oils will display the API “Starburst” Certification Mark, while GF-7B oils will bear the API “Shield” to guide proper use in recommended applications.

Designed for 2026 model-year vehicles and beyond, ILSAC GF-7 delivers ultra-low-viscosity options like SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12, catering to advanced engine designs. API SQ offers complementary performance standards, including both “Resource Conserving” and non-conserving oils.

“API has been diligently working with ILSAC and industry stakeholders to develop new oils to meet the needs of the current and future engine technologies to comply with upcoming regulations,” said Bill O’Ryan, senior manager – EOLCS/DEF with API. “The committee has aligned on these next generation oils that will help provide improved fuel efficiency, engine protection, and reduced emissions.”

API continues its role as a leader in energy standards, representing over 600 members and advancing sustainable and safe industry practices since 1919.
