Brazilian Lubricant market surprises
Brazilian Lubricant market surprises – The Brazilian lubricant market had an extraordinary performance in the 1st quarter of 2021, with a total volume of 381,863 m3, surprising by the historical record, mainly due to the volume never seen before in a single month, presented in March, equivalent to 139,660 m3.
The sales volume of lubricants in the first quarter of 2021 was 17.1% higher than in the same period in 2020. As the pandemic started last year, a comparison was made with the first quarter of 2019, and the increase was 14.5%. It should be considered that 2019 was a year of great recovery in the market.
The highlight of the period was due to automotive lubricants that grew in these first three months at a rate of 10% per month. Diesel engine oils also had a big boost in truck sales, mainly in exports, and in the large agricultural activity, which is also in line with the expressive increase in diesel fuel consumption of almost 25% in March over February, and 16.5% when compared to March 2020.
Also noteworthy is the growth in oil sales in the classification of transmission and hydraulic systems defined by the ANP, which reached the historic mark of 38 million liters in March alone, almost 36% higher than the monthly average of recent years.
Market share
The market share of the lubricant companies showed Iconic leading the group with 18.9%, followed by BR with 16.7% and Cosan with 14.5%. Shell, Petronas, YPF and Castrol next. Energis 8, Ultrax, Ingrax, and Total continue the list.
Imports increased
Imports of finished lubricating oil also reached significant record numbers, with an increase of 42.8% over the first quarter of 2020. The classification in which synthetic oils fall was the highlight of the period.
But the main focus of imports was basic oils, which closed the quarter with a volume of about 316.5 thousand cubic meters, also the largest in the history of a quarter, which corresponded to 58% of basic oils demanded in the period.
With all the effort made by the Duque de Caxias refinery, REDUC, in Rio de Janeiro, its production of 164,500 m3 corresponded to 30% of the market, while the refiner supplied the remaining 12%.
An indefinite future
Industry forecasts are the most diverse. The automaker is concerned about the lack of electronic parts and components and a possible drop in sales, with reduced mobility still due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but still projects growth, although making periodic reviews. Agribusiness promises to continue at high levels, as well as mining and other segments.
The political difficulties of putting the economy at a fast pace and the contingent expenses imposed by the pandemic also bring uncertainties about the best industrial development in the country.
Meanwhile, sales of lubricants are regaining their strength, remembering that this market has already reached the level of 1.5 million cubic meters in 2013 and, therefore, still has a lot of space to grow and surpass that mark.
Lubes em Foco magazine will continue to follow this development and bring this information to its readers, as well as promoting events that can discuss and clarify more and more all interested parties, as the 11th Meeting with the Market is scheduled, in the week of 21 to 25 next June, with registration now open on the Portallubes website.
