Fuel retailers – As of May 7, fuel retailers in Brazil must display prices with two decimal places, no longer with three. The standard is set out in the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) Resolution Nr. 858/2021, which gave a deadline until that date to adapt. The purpose of the change is to make the price of fuel more accurate and clear for the consumer, in addition to being in line with the numerical expression of the Brazilian currency.

Prices must be displayed to two decimal places both on the price panel and on the displays of the supply pumps. However, at pumps, the ANP will consent to the third digit being kept, as long as it is “zero” and is locked at the time of supply.

In this way, the stations will not need to change the pump modules, which could incur costs for economic agents. As the third decimal place will be zeroed and locked, the ANP understands that it will not generate doubts and the purpose of the rule, which is to provide clarity to consumers, will be maintained.

There are no foreseen impacts on the final value of fuel prices due to this change, as it will not bring significant costs to resellers or restrictions on prices.
