Lubricants Quality Monitoring Program

Lubricants Quality Monitoring Program – The latest bulletin of the Lubricants Quality Monitoring Program (PML) published by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) informed that 13.3% of the analyzed samples showed at least one non-compliance in the list of evaluated tests. When the focus is on the additives, the percentage of non-compliance drops to 10.5% and the list of commercial products identified with this flaw in the formulation is published on the Agency’s website.

According to ANP, the identification of deficient additives is done by analyzing chemical elements such as Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Phosphorus, Molybdenum, Sulfur, Nitrogen, among others, compared to the levels shown in the product records. These elements are present in additives incorporated into lubricating oils to act as detergents, dispersants, antioxidants and anti-wear agents. The proper dosage and technology of the additive used in the formulation of the lubricating oil are intrinsically related to its level of performance and the absence can cause the problem of sublubrication.

Other parameters analyzed were: kinematic viscosity, low temperature dynamic viscosity (CCS), Basicity Index (TBN), Pour Point, Evaporation Loss (Noack), Copper Corrosivity, High Temperature and High Shear Viscosity (HTHS), Sulphated Ash, Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Nitrogen Content, Shear Stability and Flash Point.

With the information published by the ANP on the Brazilian lubricants market, with data taken from the Product Movement Information System (SIMP), the Agency calculates the PML Quality Indicator, considering the total number of non-compliant samples in terms of quality per company, the total number of samples collected by each company and the market share of each one.

The non-conformities presented regarding the regularization of lubricants in the ANP were also analyzed, showing a percentage of 3.5%.

In summary, the compliance rates for registration and quality observed in the collected samples were 96.5% and 86.7%, respectively. Based on the quality index calculation criterion that uses the market share of companies in the sector, the PML Quality Index showed a quality compliance of 96.91%.

The ANP also publishes a list of products and its trademarks that were identified by the PML in 2023 and that do not have production authorization, active registrations or request history for any product. These are the so-called ILLEGAL PRODUCTS. In its bulletin, the Agency warns very prominently that: THE END CONSUMER SHOULD, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, PURCHASE THE LUBRICATING OILS INDICATED BELOW.
