Brazilian lubricants market 2022
The Brazilian lubricants market ended 2022 with a drop of 5.24% compared to the previous year, with a total volume of 1.4 million cubic meters, which is the fourth largest in the history of this market. Imports of base oils totaled 677,700 m3 in the year, equivalent to around 43.6% of the Brazilian base oil market, with an outlay of US$897 million, while the re-refining industry contributed with 19.3% of the base oil consumed in the country.
The companies’ market share followed the trend of recent years, with Iconic Lubrificantes maintaining the leadership with 17.45%, followed by Vibra Energia with 16.18%, with Moove/Cosan Lubrificantes coming in third with 15.15%, Neolubes/Shell with 11.42% and Petronas with 8.64% completing the TOP 5 of companies. Then appear YPF with 1.68%, Lwart with 1.64%, Energis 8 with 1.62%, Castrol with 1.36% and Teclub closing the TOP 10 with 1.30%.
Automotive oils were the ones that most contributed to the market decline, with Otto cycle products having fallen by around 7.2% and Diesel cycle products by 8.3%, contrasting with the movement of the automotive industry, which showed an increase of production around 5.4%, compared to 2021, but with a drop in sales of around 0.7%.
The base oils
Imports of base oils reached a total of around 677.7 thousand m3, at a cost close to US$897 million for the country’s coffers, representing 43.6% of the total base oil market in Brazil. Production in the refineries reached 576.4 thousand m3, reaching 37.1%, while the re-refining industry contributed with 300.3 thousand m3 or 19.3%.
